Using fish to understand how cities affect sexual selection before and after mating

چکیده
Urbanization transforms natural and agricultural areas into built landscapes. Such profound habitat alteration imposes strong pressure on phenotypic trait changes through processes related to and/or sexual selection. Evidence of how selection drives traits in urban biota is increasing, but little known about the role In this study, we assessed effect urbanization expression interaction males' pre-mating (body size color) a post-mating (sperm load). We used widespread invasive species, guppy ( Poecilia reticulata ), which wellknown model for studying selection, have never been studied systems purpose. found that did not affect mean body or condition, it resulted size-dependent reductions orange iridescent colors, as well sperm load. The color was reduced small guppies, while colors were large guppies compared non-urban guppies. difference load only males, with lower relationship between positive negative association followed opposite pattern. Our findings suggest pre- weaker than interactions such are context dependent. Polyandry as a mediator of sexual selection before and after mating
The Darwin-Bateman paradigm recognizes competition among males for access to multiple mates as the main driver of sexual selection. Increasingly, however, females are also being found to benefit from multiple mating so that polyandry can generate competition among females for access to multiple males, and impose sexual selection on female traits that influence their mating success. Polyandry ca...
متن کاملSexual Selection: Copycat Mating
Female zebra finches may be influenced by the choices of other females when selecting mates, challenging the view that mate-choice copying should not occur in species with biparental care. Choosing a mate is not a simple business. A female needs a male in order to reproduce, but how does she know which one to pick? How can she find a good mate without wasting too much time and effort? One answe...
متن کاملSexual selection and mating systems.
Sexual selection is among the most powerful of all evolutionary forces. It occurs when individuals within one sex secure mates and produce offspring at the expense of other individuals within the same sex. Darwin was first to recognize the power of sexual selection to change male and female phenotypes, and, in noting that sexual selection is nonubiquitous, Darwin was also first to recognize the...
متن کاملHow multiple mating by females affects sexual selection.
Multiple mating by females is widely thought to encourage post-mating sexual selection and enhance female fitness. We show that whether polyandrous mating has these effects depends on two conditions. Condition 1 is the pattern of sperm utilization by females; specifically, whether, among females, male mating number, m (i.e. the number of times a male mates with one or more females) covaries wit...
متن کاملMating portfolios: bet-hedging, sexual selection and female multiple mating.
Polyandry (female multiple mating) has profound evolutionary and ecological implications. Despite considerable work devoted to understanding why females mate multiply, we currently lack convincing empirical evidence to explain the adaptive value of polyandry. Here, we provide a direct test of the controversial idea that bet-hedging functions as a risk-spreading strategy that yields multi-genera...
